Guest Rant by Layanee DeMerchant I confess; I’m caught up in the romance and intrigue of the PBS series, “Downton Abbey.” I’m enjoying the fashion, the opulence and the stunning backdrop of a castle, on top of the great acting and the fascinating changes going on in British society at that time, so unfamiliar to [...]

UPDATE: If you missed the show, here’s the story about weeds. And to answer a commenter asking about a book mentioned, it’s Foraged Flavor by Wong. From CBS, via press release: To some, weeds are the scourge of the earth, killing precious crops along the way. To others, however,...

TV Show about Lawns in Development We’ve been ranting for years now about the dearth of gardening shows on TV, so imagine my surprise to hear there’s a new show about lawns coming from Country Music Television! Yeah, I’d never heard of them, either, but I’m told they’re the...

Recently this message went out to the Yahoo group of one of Washington’s tonier neighborhoods, with the title “Beautiful perennial garden in back yard needed for TV Commercial.” Would anyone be interested in having a tv commercial shot in their back yard one day around the third week in...

I’ve been blabbing away about Garden Walk Buffalo, which is a free tour of only 380 or so gardens. What I should have mentioned is that is is the centerpiece of a larger, month-long garden festival that offers 1,000 gardens to visitors, including a a weekly Open...

Like many of you, I stopped watching garden shows on HGTV when they effectively dropped the “G”. But during my recent adventure in the buying and selling of houses – one each – I watched their real estate shows like a crazywoman. Could not get enough of them, as...

Susan has written about this movie before, here and here. Now the folks at Oprah's OWN network have contacted us to share a trailer and let us know that it will be airing on Sunday. Check it out: Watch the Trailer for A Man Named Pearl That pretty...

This comes to us from David Perry, an amazing photographer of gardens and other assorted stuff (see his photographs and a project he's working on with Debra Prinzing on sustainable cut flowers here) and–well–this is what David does in his spare time. We pass it on to you. ...

26 episodes. 8 months. 18 states. 36 cities. 254 stations. 4,058 tweets. Joe Lamp'l's PBS show Growing a Greener World has wrapped up its first season, and they've got a cool summary reel that looks back over their first year on the air. (It'll be worth watching through...

When I first heard about the movie "Gnomeo and Juliet", I wasn't exactly optimistic about a movie about garden gnomes, especially if it's in 3D. But here's what NPR's Kenneth Turan has to say about it: What's in a name, after all? No one could be more surprised...

Technically, it’s been solenostemon for years, but I don’t know anyone, even the most die-hard of botanical name purists, refer to it as anything but coleus. And that’s the way it should be. Joseph/Greensparrow Gardens has similar feelings about this and other preemptory and seemingly arbitrary scientific name changes....

Genevieve Schmidt of NorthCoastGardening is known for making actual useful, instructive videos about garden tools–not the kind of rambling, intoxicated things we normally do on GardenRant — so Gen and...

As you have no doubt heard by now, Oprah is holding an open casting call for would-be hosts for her new network. Even the front runners are not particularly slick–I'm amazed that people who want to have their own TV show don't even bother to find a nice background...

Have you been wondering what the deal was with the Olympic flowers? I have. When I first saw the yellow/chartreuse bouquets, I wondered if they had some kind of significance to Vancouver, because they are so unlike the traditional flowers you might expect—any color roses would be the norm,...

Guest Rant by Ginny Stibolt, the Transplanted Gardener I don't have cable and don't watch HGTV, except rarely on other people's TVs. So maybe I've missed some of the details, but it appears that the landscaping for their 2010 green home in Plymouth, Mass. sets a bad example for...

photo credit: Melinda Sue Gordon, Universal Studios Great piece from the LA Times on Meryl Streep's character's garden in "It's Complicated." Director Nancy Meyers is known for her real-estate-porn-for-middle-aged-women approach to set design (remember Diane Keaton's house in "Something's Gotta Give"?) Well, she took the same approach to this...
