English Garden Tools–We Have a Winner!

You people did not make it easy to choose a winner. I chose a few favorite and then drew one at random–and our winner of a Clarington Forge spade is:

Benjamin, the poet, the writer, with this clever and thoughtful entry:

Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus

Reach out and touch dirt
Your own powerful shovel
Something to move your iris
Something that works
Your own powerful shovel
Something to slice through clay
Something f**king today

Feeling’s familiar and you’re all alone
No one to help or to hear your bones
Claw through the soil
It’ll make your blood boil

Damn that dirt
This garden’s a flirt
It’s too hot
You should’ve grown pot
Make the work trippy
It could deliver
Reach out and touch dirt.

Your own powerful shovel.
Make the work trippy
It could deliver
Make you a believer.
Reach out and touch dirt.

Although John has to be a very close second–he won my heart by choosing a Sex Pistols song. That last line just knocks me out.

Sung to the tune of ‘Friggin’ in the Riggin’ by the Sex Pistols

Gotcha in my right hand
a cold one in my left
We’ll spend the day amongst the weeds
We’ll probably break a sweat

Diggin’ in the garden
Diggin’ in the garden
Diggin’ in the garden
It’s my favorite thing to do!

I’ll shovel on the compost
I’ll shovel all the snow
I’m just as handy with a rake
and you should see me with a hoe

I also loved Jennifer's 'Eleanor Rigby,' which included this line that will probably stick in my head forever:

All the lousy shovels

Where do they all come from?

And–well–many more. Y'all are amazing. Thanks for playing!

That was awesome. Great entries everyone!

  2. John says:

Great Fun! Any chance you’ll get the tool folks to read them on camera and post to Youtube, like the limerick contest earlier in the year?

Guess I should’ve spelled “hoe” without the “e” huh?
