Growing Science Experiments

The Wall Street Journal has a fun piece today about seed sources promoting strange-looking varieties to vegetable gardeners. I consider my vegetable garden one big amusing trial ground, so I’m all for it.  The fashiony purple pole bean ‘Blue Coco’ that I tried for the first time last year beat all other contenders for texture and flavor.

That clown George Ball of Burpee talks about ‘All Blue’ potatoes as a marketing failure: "flopperoos."  The MOST delicious baked potato in my experience.  Bake it until the skin is a hard boat and fill the thing with sour cream and chives. Life is good.

That purple pak choi they mention is one of the most spectacular little foliage plants I’ve ever seen.

Susan, are you listening to tai haku? It sounds perfect for a potager.
